STROKE AMBASSADOR RECREATES AMBULANCE RIDE — ON HER BIKE

Thursday, June 16, 2016 -- In 2009, at the age of 52 and fit, Paula Symanski woke up in the night and couldn’t find her arm. She called 911, and was taken to Ellis Medicine, where stroke was diagnosed. Doctors determined that she needed surgery, and since the surgeon that covered Ellis and Albany Medical Center was at Albany Med, Symanski was transported there by ambulance.

On Thursday, May 5, Symanski replicated that 20-mile trip – by bicycle. She continued on to the Empire State Plaza in Albany to participle in the 2016 Capital Region Heart Walk Torch Ceremony.

JOY TO YOUR WORLD

Wednesday, May 4, 2016 -- The 2007 movie, “The Bucket List," had many wisdoms. As you might recall, there was a segment referring to the meaning of life and joy.  The value of life is based on two questions: did we find joy in our life and did we bring joy to others? This movie made a real impression on me, and undoubtedly many others too.

Thursday, April 28, 2016 -- You don’t need superpowers to be a hero when it comes to stroke, you just need to pay attention to the risk factors and know the warning signs.

ALZHEIMER'S AND SPIRITUALITY

"Who has seen the wind? Neither I nor you. But when the leaves hang trembling, the wind is passing through." -Christina Rossetti

Our bodies we can see, weigh, touch, and even decorate. Our minds we can see in operation when someone solves a difficult problem or memorizes a poem. We can measure intelligence and observe the inner workings of the brain through modern imaging.

But there is no CT scan of the spirit. Like the wind, it cannot be seen, but it is a strong force in our lives. We see evidence of the spirit in a parent’s love for a child. It motivates heroes, fuels curiosity of a scientist, and sustains a Holocaust survivor. We see signs of the spirit in the mother who cannot recall her child’s name, but can recite an Emily Dickinson poem; in the father who cannot learn even a simple tune on the piano, but plays previously learned complex tunes.
